The former capital of Burma and the inspiration of Rudyard Kipling (though it is doubtful that he ever visited the city!). The environs contain a wealth of sightseeing and marble and wood carvers. The restored Palace and the surrounding countryside are best viewed from the temple atop Mandalay Hill.
