Myanmar

MINGALABAR!

Welcome to this vast and mysterious land - the largest in South East Asia - steeped in Buddhist culture , home to one of the most charming people on earth. The country has a wealth of British colonial architecture and an amazing array of pagodas and temples, though international hotels and offices are beginning to make their mark on the skylines of Rangoon and Mandalay. Whilst not in the mainstream of tourism, Burma contains some of the most spectacular sights in Asia.

Do take a torch when travelling in Myanmar! Light pollution is not a problem in a country where the electricity supply can be erratic…

Rangoon
The fascinating capital of Burma contains a strange mixture of decaying Victorian buildings, old Christian churches, the magnificent Shwedagon Pagoda (best visited at dawn), numerous markets and a bustling waterfront on the Rangoon river. There are two beautifully kept World War II cemeteries in the Rangoon area.

Dont miss:
Shwedagon Pagoda at dawn; high tea at the Strand

Mandalay
The former capital of Burma and the inspiration of Rudyard Kipling (though it is doubtful that he ever visited the city!). The environs contain a wealth of sightseeing and marble and wood carvers. The restored Palace and the surrounding countryside are best viewed from the temple atop Mandalay Hill.

Dont miss:
sunset on Mandalay Hill; pagoda complex at Sagaing

Maymyo
An old British hill station, a 2 hour ride up a twisting road from Mandalay. This is where the colonial governments would decamp in the hot season. With well maintained colonial architecture, you could be forgiven for thinking that you are in parts of rural England!

Dont miss:
ride in one of the local carriages; stroll through the Botanical Gardens

Inle Lake
Against a spectacular backdrop of the rugged Shan mountains, Inle Lake is a truly serene environment. A full day out on a local boat on the lake, home to the famous and unique "leg rowers", visiting floating gardens, markets and pagodas is a wonderful experience.

Bagan
Home to thousands of temples, of all shapes and sizes standing on a plain that stretches for miles, beside the vast Irrawaddy River. The sunsets are spectacular, viewed from a high vantage point. Lacquer ware is the local speciality.
Dont miss:
floating across the Plain of Pagan in a hot-air balloon

Beaches of Myanmar
Experience Asia's finest sunsets in perfect tranquillity from this magnificent stretch of unspoiled white sand beach. Rent a bicycle to explore the surrounding rice and spice fields or take a fishing boat to a deserted offshore island. Ngapali is blissfully free of crowds, noise and intrusion.
