Oman

For its traditions history and culture Oman ticks all the boxes. From Muscat, the capital with its 17th century harbour, old forts, souks to the southern city of Salalah where the Empty Quarter (the desert) stretches for 250,000 miles and up to the jagged coastal mountains of the Mussandam Peninsula. For years it was an adventure to reach the remote Mussandam Peninsula but now there are high-speed passenger ferries that make the journey easier to reach the luxurious SIX SENSES HIDEAWAY at Zighy Bay.

From the Stone Age some 10,000 years ago to the more recent 16th century when the Portuguese occupied Muscat evidence of the history and traditions are still found even with the discovery of the all-important oil. There is certainly more to do than shop or relax in the sun.

Oman is the traditional home of frankincense and years ago traders would journey home bearing the musky perfume which was once more valuable than gold. A must buy for all aromatherapists I would think!

Popular tourist attractions include sand skiing in the desert and camel racing.
